Material Description:
Shang Yunsha is a national intangible cultural heritage craft and a treasure of Chinese folk handicrafts, with a history of over 1,700 years. The production process of Shang Yunsha involves 14 techniques and 36 procedures, including soaking in indigo water, blackening, and water washing, commonly known as “three steams, nine boils, and eighteen sunnings”. After being made, Shang Yunsha needs to be stored in a cellar for 1 to 3 years before it can be used for clothing. Therefore, it is also called “soft gold”.

Color description: Luozidai
Slow to rise and paint the eyebrows, taking her time with makeup and grooming. Luozidai is a superior shade of black, derived from the eyebrow dye presented as tribute by Persia during the Qing Dynasty. Only the highest-ranking concubines in the imperial harem or those specially favored by the emperor had the privilege of using it. Made from grinding the powder of sea snails from the Mediterranean, its rarity is due to the slow and difficult growth and reproduction of the snails, and the long journey it had to undertake along the Silk Road. The preciousness of Luozidai is self-evident. The black of Luozidai gives a sense of sophistication, evoking the image of “green mountains veiled in mist, and nearby waters shrouded in smoke.”

Chrysanthemum: “Picking chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, I calmly see the southern mountains” evokes the chrysanthemum’s refined and graceful demeanor.
