Material Description:
Originating in the Spring and Autumn period and formed in the Song Dynasty, Song brocade is known as the “crown of Chinese brocades” in later generations. It is a fabric of the highest level in traditional Chinese textiles. The production process of Song brocade is rather complex, with the main feature being the simultaneous display of patterns by both the warp and weft threads. The patterns are symmetrical, rigorous yet varied, rich and colorful, and fluid and vivid.
Color Description:
Peacock Blue, Crystal White
The pinkish-white flowers swaying by the shimmering lake are the most vivid portrayal of the Crystal White color, which is slightly tinged with silver.
Peacock Blue is derived from the glaze color of Ming Dynasty official kiln porcelain. Its characteristic is a hint of iridescent grayish-green in the blue. When applied to silk Song brocade fabric, it brings a unique vitality, just like “The river flowers are redder than fire at sunrise, and the river water is as green as blue in spring.”
Pattern Description:
Auspicious Cloud and Lion Pattern
The auspicious cloud pattern is a design rich in profound cultural connotations. It is not only a decoration but also a spiritual寄托. The auspicious cloud pattern symbolizes good fortune, prosperity, and longevity.
The lion pattern is one of the traditional auspicious animal patterns in folk culture. However, lions are not native to China but were introduced as tributes during the Western Han Dynasty and later developed in China. Legend has it that the lion pattern has the function of warding off evil and eliminating disasters and is often decorated on objects. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the lion pattern was widely used in architecture, furniture, porcelain, jade, and clothing. Its image transformed from fierce and powerful to a popular auspicious pattern, symbolizing good luck, peace, wealth, and official success.
